books I've read in the past month

Blame it on Brakston coming home, a new year, or whatever other good-mood-inducing thing you want, all I know is that I enjoyed almost everything I read this month. Some of them were just light-hearted easy reads but they were pleasant none-the-less.

The Wednesday Sisters by Meg Waite Clayton
The Scent of Rain and Lightning by Nancy Pickard
The Maze Runner (Maze Runner #1) by James Dashner
A Vintage Affair: A Novel by Isabel Wolff
Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman
Truly, Madly (Lucy Valentine, #1) by Heather Webber
29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life by Cami Walker
Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout
I am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced by Nujood Ali

I would recommend any of them except "Olive Kitteridge". It was dreadful! "The Scent of Rain and Lightning" was only okay.

books I've read in the past month

Here's the list of books I've read in the past month. I've * the ones I recommend.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place by Aron Ralston
*The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe
Bound South by Susan Rebecca White
*The Hidden Christ: Beneath the Surface of the Old Testament by James L. Ferrell
The Calligrapher's Daughter by Eugenia Kim
The Rest of Her Life by Laura Moriarty
*Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
The Compound by S.A. Bodeen

I've loved Little Women since I was a girl and have lost track of how many times I've read it. The Hidden Christ took me forever to read because I had to do some heavy-duty thinking.

The biggest disappointment was Between a Rock and a Hard Place. It has been on my to-read list for over a year. It's the memoir of a trapped hiker in Southern Utah who had to cut off his arm to free himself and survive. It sounded like my type of book but the book is mostly about Aron's outdoor adventures in the years leading up to his canyon entrapment and escape.

Book Awards

A few book awards:

Best Romance: Pride and Prejudice

Best Fantasy: the Harry Potter series

Best Adventure: Dead Lucky: Life After Death on Mount Everest

Biggest Impact on My Teen Life: To Kill a Mockingbird

Most Influential: The Book of Mormon

Best Young Adult Fiction: The Hunger Games

These are MY awards - not based on any scientific research. Just my own humble opinion for whatever that is worth.

It might be interesting to note that I have read 63 of the 100 books which were voted the 100 Best Books on www.goodreads.com. My favorites of those I have read many times each. Several more of the 100 books are on my to-read list. Some of the books, I must admit, I have absolutely NO interest in reading!

books I've read in the past month

Once again it is time for my report on the past month's reading. I managed to read 11 books in the past month which is quite a few but, unfortunately, they were not my favorite books. The two best books of the bunch I still only rated about 4 stars out of 5. I put an asterick by those two.

The Angels of Morgan Hill - by Donna VanLiere

Kissing Games of the World - by Sandi Kahn Shelton

The Dirty Secrets Club - by Meg Gardiner

Stolen Lives: Twenty Years in a Desert Jail - by Malika Oufkir

City of Thieves - by David Benioff

Black and Blue - by Anna Quindlen

The Seat of the Soul - by Gary Zukav

**Survive! My Fight for Life in the High Sierras - by Peter DeLeo

Before You Get to Heaven: 8 Mighty Changes God Wants for You - by D. Kelly Ogden

The Road - by Cormac McCarthy

**The Patron Saint of Butterflies - Cecilia Galante

About the best thing I can say about this set of books is that it helped me in my quest to read a book by an author of every letter of the alphabet. This batch of books netted me an O, Q, V, and Z author. That only leaves me I, U, and X authors and then I have read my way through the alphabet this year.
